KPN Speed Test

This diagnostic utility validates the throughput of your KPN connection. To interpret your results, you must first identify your infrastructure type. KPN Glasvezel (Fiber) delivers symmetrical, consistent speeds regardless of distance. KPN Koper (DSL/VDSL) is strictly distance-dependent; if you live 2km from the "Wijkkast" (Street Cabinet), you may pay for 100 Mbps but physically only receive 20 Mbps.

Understanding Your Speed Metrics

When analyzing your connection integrity, focus on these three performance vectors:

Download Throughput:
Glasvezel (1 Gbps / 4 Gbps): Via Ethernet, you should see ~940 Mbps (on 1G) or ~3.5 Gbps (on 4G XGS-PON, if you have a 10GbE card).
VDSL (Copper): Speeds are variable. If you test at 50 Mbps but pay for 100 Mbps, log into the modem. If the "Actual Rate" is 50 Mbps, you are limited by the physical copper length.

Upload Throughput: This identifies your line type instantly.
Fiber: Symmetrical. (e.g., 500 Down / 500 Up).
DSL: Asymmetrical. A 100 Mbps download plan typically has only 10-30 Mbps upload.
If you are a content creator, the 30 Mbps upload cap on DSL is a hard physical limit.

Latency (Ping): KPN Fiber routes efficiently to AMS-IX (Amsterdam). Expect 3ms to 8ms. VDSL connections will hover around 20-30ms due to "Interleaving" error correction.

What Results Should You Expect?

The "KPN Box 12" & "SuperWifi" Factor

Your in-home hardware dictates your Wi-Fi experience. Benchmarks include:

KPN Box 12 (Sagemcom): A Wi-Fi 6 Modem. Capable of ~900 Mbps wired. The LED lights are "Smart"—they turn off after a while to save energy. Don't panic if no lights are on; press the button to wake them.

Experia Box v10 / v10a (ZTE/Arcadyan): Wi-Fi 5 only. Wireless speeds cap at ~400 Mbps. Solid and stable for wired connections.

KPN SuperWifi Points: These are Mesh nodes. If a node has a Orange Light, it is too far from the base. It must be Green for optimal speed.

Why Is Your KPN Connection Slow?

Before calling Klantenservice (0800-0402), verify these common Dutch premise faults:

Bridge Taps: In older homes, telephone sockets were often "daisy-chained" from the living room to the bedroom. This creates "Reflections" on the line. You must disconnect all secondary sockets and plug the modem directly into the primary incoming line.

NTU Power (Fiber): The small square box clicked onto the fiber outlet (FTU) needs power. If the "Glass" light is off, the signal is not reaching your modem.

TV Decoder Priority: KPN TV (IPTV) prioritizes video traffic. If you are recording 2 HD shows and watching a 4K movie, your internet bandwidth will drop by ~25-30 Mbps.

How to Get an Accurate Test

Wireless testing is unreliable in dense Dutch row houses (Rijtjeshuis) due to interference.

To confirm the actual speed delivered to your home:
1. Connect a Cat5e/Cat6 cable from the Yellow LAN Port on the KPN Box to a laptop.
2. Turn off the KPN TV receiver temporarily.
3. Run the test.
If wired speed matches your plan, but Wi-Fi is slow, consider adding SuperWifi 2 points.

When to Call Support

Escalate the issue to KPN if you observe these specific failures:

Red "Internet" Light: Authentication failure. The modem cannot log in to the KPN network.

Blinking "Glass" Light (NTU): The fiber signal is too weak (Attenuation). A technician needs to clean or re-splice the connection.

Crackling Phone Line: If you hear noise on your landline (VDSL users), that same noise is killing your internet speed.

You can manage your subscription, run the "KPN Modem Check," and reset your line via the MijnKPN App or by calling 0800-0402.
