LIWEST Speed Test — Upper Austria's Cable Provider
LIWEST is a regional cable internet provider serving Upper Austria — primarily Linz, Wels, Steyr, and the surrounding Oberösterreich region. Unlike the national providers A1 and Magenta, LIWEST is locally operated and focused exclusively on its home region, delivering internet, TV, and telephone over its DOCSIS 3.1 HFC cable network.
LIWEST's advantage over Magenta (which also runs cable) is a generally less congested network due to its smaller, regional customer base. Where Magenta's inherited UPC network serves millions nationwide, LIWEST's concentrated footprint means fewer customers sharing each coaxial node — which typically translates to more consistent speeds during peak hours.
LIWEST Internet Plans
| Plan | Download | Upload | Technology |
|---|---|---|---|
| Speed 40 | 40 Mbps | 5 Mbps | DOCSIS 3.0 |
| Speed 150 | 150 Mbps | 15 Mbps | DOCSIS 3.0 |
| Speed 500 | 500 Mbps | 50 Mbps | DOCSIS 3.1 |
| Speed 1000 (Giga) | 1,000 Mbps | 100 Mbps | DOCSIS 3.1 |
Like all cable ISPs, LIWEST plans are heavily asymmetric — upload is only 10% of download. For symmetric upload, you would need a fibre-to-the-home provider like A1 Fiber where available.
24-Stunden-Speed — LIWEST's Unique Speed Boost
LIWEST offers something no other Austrian ISP provides: a 24-hour speed boost for a small one-time fee (around €5). Activate it via your LIWEST customer portal, and your download speed jumps to the next tier for exactly 24 hours.
This is perfect for:
- Downloading a large game (Call of Duty updates can exceed 100 GB)
- Backing up photos and files to cloud storage
- Hosting a movie night when multiple 4K streams are needed
If the boosted speed works perfectly, it also proves your physical cable line is healthy — the limitation was your plan tier, not your infrastructure.
FRITZ!Box 6660 Cable — LIWEST's Standard Router
| Setting | Details |
|---|---|
| Admin URL | fritz.box or 192.168.178.1 |
| Password | Printed on sticker underneath the device |
| Wi-Fi | Wi-Fi 6 (802.11ax) — dual-band 2.4/5 GHz |
| Bridge Mode | Contact LIWEST support (0732 94 21 11) to enable |
Older installations may still use an Arris or Technicolor modem at 192.168.0.1 with default credentials admin/password.
The TV + Internet Coax Splitter Issue
Since LIWEST delivers both cable TV and internet over the same coaxial cable, most apartments have a splitter dividing the signal. A corroded, damaged, or cheap splitter can halve your internet speed while your TV continues to work fine (TV requires less bandwidth).
If your speed test is consistently 40-60% below plan: disconnect the TV cable temporarily, connect the coax directly to the modem, and test again. If speed jumps up, replace the splitter with a quality high-frequency rated one.
LIWEST Speed Test FAQs
What is the 24-Stunden-Speed boost? LIWEST occasionally offers a temporary speed boost feature where your connection runs at the next higher tier for 24 hours. This is useful for large game downloads or events. Check the LIWEST Kundenportal (customer portal) to see if it's available on your plan.
Why is my speed lower than advertised? The most common cause on cable is a bad coax splitter between the wall outlet and your modem. Every splitter reduces signal. Try connecting the modem directly to the wall outlet without any splitters. If speed jumps, replace the splitter with a quality high-frequency rated one.
Is LIWEST less congested than Magenta? Generally yes. LIWEST serves a smaller, regional customer base (Upper Austria) compared to Magenta's nationwide network. Fewer subscribers per node means less peak-hour congestion, especially in Linz and surrounding areas.
Can I use my own router with LIWEST? Yes. Put the LIWEST cable modem into Bridge Mode, then connect your own router's WAN port to it. This avoids double NAT and gives you full control over Wi-Fi channels, QoS, and VPN settings.
Why does my speed cap at exactly 100 Mbps? Your Ethernet cable is likely Cat5 (limited to 100 Mbps). Replace it with Cat5e or Cat6. Also check that your computer's network adapter supports Gigabit — some older laptops have Fast Ethernet (100 Mbps) ports.
Austrian Broadband Comparison
- A1 — Austria's national telecom. DSL and growing FTTH. Where A1 Fiber is available, it offers symmetric speeds that cable cannot match.
- Magenta — National cable provider (ex-UPC). Same HFC technology as LIWEST but nationwide. Generally more congested in Vienna due to larger customer density.
- Drei (3) — Fixed wireless 5G. Good alternative in areas with strong Drei 5G coverage. No physical infrastructure needed.
LIWEST support: Call 0732 94 21 11. LIWEST offers in-person service at its shops in Linz and Wels. For speed complaints, they typically request 3 wired speed tests (morning, noon, evening) submitted via their contact form before dispatching a technician.
