Why compare NBN plans here
Twenty-nine retailers sell roughly 150 NBN plans across seven speed tiers, from NBN 25 up to NBN 2000, and this page lays all of them out in one filterable table.
The structure of the Australian market is what makes this genuinely worth doing. Every retailer resells the same NBN Co wholesale network, so the fibre, copper and hybrid connections arriving at two neighbouring houses are often physically identical even when the bills differ. Because network quality is largely shared, the real differences between plans come down to price, how each service holds up during evening congestion, customer service and extras. Side-by-side comparison can therefore be decisive rather than decorative.
The filters hand choice back to you instead of serving a ranked shortlist built on someone else's idea of value. Chip buttons narrow the table to a single tier (NBN 25 through 2000), search finds a named provider, the sort dropdown includes customer-satisfaction ordering where CHOICE survey data exists, and a slider sets the highest monthly price you will consider. Tick intro-deals-only to see promotional pricing alone, click any column heading to re-sort, or lean on the best-value-per-tier line computed on the fly.
Two calculated columns do most of the analytical work. The value score divides ongoing monthly price by typical evening speed, giving cents per Mbps where lower is better, and evening speed matters because ACCC busy-hour measuring has found the industry delivering roughly 91 to 100 percent of plan speed depending on retailer. Headline numbers flatter; busy-hour numbers decide. The first-year average then spreads a promotional discount across twelve months, so a six-month teaser cannot disguise an expensive standard rate waiting behind it.
Independence here is structural, not rhetorical. Sorting runs entirely in your browser, there are no affiliate links or paid placements, and nothing asks for an address, email or phone number before showing prices. Limits still apply: prices were checked on provider websites recently and change often, the technology connected to your address (FTTP, HFC, FTTN, FTTC, fixed wireless or satellite) may cap which tiers you can actually order, and the retailer's checkout page remains the final word on what you pay.
NBN speed tiers explained
Pick a tier based on how many people share your connection and what they do online. Here is what each tier realistically handles in 2026.
NBN 500 has replaced NBN 100 for FTTP and HFC homes
On 14 September 2025, NBN Co retired the old Home Fast 100 product on Fibre to the Premises and Hybrid Fibre Coax, replacing it with Home Fast II at 500/50 Mbps. Retailers kept prices where NBN 100 used to sit, which is why Telstra, Optus and TPG now charge the same for either tier. If your address qualifies, an NBN 500 plan delivers five times the speed of the old NBN 100 for nothing extra, and ordering one starts NBN Co's free fibre upgrade if you are still connected through copper.
NBN 25
Suits one or two people who browse, stream in HD on a single screen and rarely download large files. Carbon Comms sells it for $57 a month ongoing and Southern Phone for $59, both without intro pricing games.
NBN 50
The most subscribed tier in the country. It handles two or three simultaneous streams plus video calls, which covers most couples and small families. Southern Phone charges $79 ongoing with no promo attached.
NBN 100
A sensible pick when several people stream, game or work from home at once. On FTTN and FTTB connections this is the fastest tier copper can deliver. Ongoing prices start around $86.
NBN 500
The default choice on FTTP and HFC since replacing NBN 100. Exetel sells one plan at $80 flat and Moose Mobile runs intro deals from $63.80, so paying more than $95 a month for this tier takes some justifying.
NBN 750
Halfway to gigabit, mostly bought by households that want headroom rather than having a specific need. Carbon Comms lists $91 ongoing with a static IP included, which is hard to beat at this speed.
NBN 1000
Gigabit makes sense for heavy downloaders, creators pushing large files and busy smart homes. Southern Phone undercuts the big brands at $95 ongoing, though the address needs FTTP or HFC.
NBN 2000
Hyperfast arrived in September 2025 and needs the new 2.5GbE NTD, which providers supply when you sign up. Leaptel asks $165 a month and MATE publishes a typical evening figure of 1831 Mbps on Scorchin' Fast, so the speeds are real rather than theoretical.
Can your connection get these speeds?
Your maximum tier depends on the NBN technology installed at your address. Around five million FTTN and FTTC homes can move to full fibre at no cost, and ordering a plan of NBN 500 or faster usually triggers the upgrade automatically.
| Technology | Max speed tier | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| FTTP (Fibre to the Premises) | All tiers incl. NBN 2000/200 | Full fibre, and the most consistent performer in ACCC busy-hour testing |
| HFC (Hybrid Fibre Coax) | All tiers incl. NBN 2000/100 | Optus and Telstra cable areas, opened to the hyperfast range in September 2025 |
| FTTC (Fibre to the Curb) | NBN 100 (NBN 250 in some areas) | About 600k premises can upgrade to FTTP free from July 2026 without a high-speed plan |
| FTTN / FTB (Fibre to the Node/Building) | NBN 100 max | The copper last mile limits speed. Ordering NBN 500 or faster unlocks the free fibre upgrade |
| Fixed Wireless | FW Home Fast 400/40 | Regional areas. The Plus tier reaches about 100 Mbps and Home Fast arrived with the recent upgrades |
| Sky Muster Plus (Satellite) | Up to 100 Mbps | Rural and remote only. Skymesh Ultra plans start at $59.95, with low-orbit satellite options expected late 2026 |
NBN plan FAQs
Which NBN speed tier should I choose?
NBN 25 works for one or two people who browse and stream in HD. NBN 50 covers a small household streaming on a few screens at once, which is why it carries the most subscriptions nationally. NBN 100 suits busier homes with gamers or several people working from home. Since September 2025, anyone on FTTP or HFC pays about the same for NBN 500 as they once did for NBN 100, so larger households should look there first. Gigabit and Hyperfast are for creators, heavy downloaders and anyone who wants headroom.
Why do NBN 500 and NBN 100 plans cost the same?
On 14 September 2025 NBN Co retired the old Home Fast 100 product on FTTP and HFC and replaced it with Home Fast II at 500/50 Mbps. Retailers kept pricing where it was, so Telstra and Optus charge $99 and TPG charges $94.99 whether the customer ends up on 100 or 500. Copper connections stay capped at NBN 100, which is why both products remain on sale.
What does 'typical evening speed' mean?
It is the average speed a provider records between 7pm and 11pm, the busiest window on the network. Plans are marketed on headline speed, but evening performance is what most households actually experience. ACCC measuring found the industry delivered 99.4 percent of plan speed in busy hours in its latest reporting period, with Optus leading retailers at 102.3 percent.
Can my home get NBN 500, NBN 1000 or NBN 2000?
FTTP handles everything up to NBN 2000. HFC supports the same range with a slightly lower upload ceiling on Hyperfast. FTTN, FTTB and most FTTC connections stop at NBN 100 because of the copper or short fibre run involved. Roughly five million FTTN and FTTC premises can upgrade to full fibre free of charge, and ordering an NBN 500 plan normally starts that process. Fixed Wireless tops out near 400 Mbps on the new FW Home Fast tier.
How long do promotional NBN prices last?
Six months is the standard run. Kogan locks its discount for twelve months, as do several Dodo ultrafast deals and amaysim's current offers. Telstra halves the bill for two months instead. Almost everything is month to month, so switching when a discount ends is a normal move rather than a hassle. The first-year average column exists precisely for that comparison.
What is the cheapest way to get fast NBN in 2026?
On NBN 500, Exetel's single plan at $80 flat is the safest bet because the price never moves. Superloop Family Max costs $65 for six months then $95, and Moose Mobile runs $63.80 for six months before settling at $86.80. At gigabit, Southern Phone charges $95 ongoing and SpinTel $104.95. For light users, Carbon Comms holds NBN 25 at $57 with a static IP included.
Is a modem included with these NBN plans?
Telstra, Optus, TPG, iiNet and Superloop include a router if you stay connected for 24 months. Aussie Broadband, Exetel and Belong expect you to bring your own. Launtel does not supply hardware at all, which fits its pause-anytime model. Read the terms before signing, because leaving early can trigger a modem charge.
Are these plans unlimited data?
Yes. Every plan in the table includes unlimited data on month-to-month terms unless a row states otherwise. Shaped or capped fixed-line plans have effectively vanished from the Australian retail market.
